Carboncarbon composite (CCC) has many thermal and mechanical properties required by aerospace, automotive, Semiconductor, MOCVDindustrial applications to name but a few where materials must operate at high temperature in vacuum. These include stable mechanical properties to temperatures approaching 3000 °C; high ratios of stiffness-to-weight and strength-to-weight; low thermal expansion; and good resistance to thermal shock and corrosion.

Carbon Carbon Compositeheating elements offer a 2100°Cmaximum temperature when vacuum heating, for use in UHV, high vacuum or inert atmosphere (Not suitable for use in O2 above 500c). High strength, Low cost, high power density element, available as a single element in sizes up to 1000mm x 1000mm, mainly used for flat heater elements due to raw material availability. Standard heating element sizes available from stock. Standard thicknesses from 1.2mm. Will not age harden and become stronger with temperature. Our number one choice of element in non-oxidising atmosphere.

High density graphite is ideal for vacuum heating elements. The graphite elements are highly inert and the material actually increases in strength as it becomes hotter. Another feature of the material is that it has a low expansion coefficient and is resistant to degrading due to constant heat cycling therefore, it has a good lifespan in this respect and a relatively fast ramp rate.

The elements are made from blocks of high purity graphite and with the correct material selection the graphite can be machined into detailed forms for one off or low volume batches.If you can not find your requirement in the stock items below or in the gallery then please contact us to discuss you requirement further. The designs can be of a 3D nature to produce a tubular heateror flat as required. Alternatively, we can design elements or work from existing drawings.

Thermic Edge can provide Silicon Carbide coated elements or Titanium Carbide coating to further enhance these element in terms of purity and using graphite in air.

Thermic Edge have developed a range of standard Silicon Carbide Coating (SiC) coated Graphite elements in order to provide a low cost solution for high temperature heating in O2 and corrosive environments. SiC coating is suitable for use in Oxygen environments up to 1600°C and in High Vacuum up to 1000°C. The Sic coating is fully compatible with Hydrogen and inert gas environments.

The graphite elements are simple to mount, with two M14 threaded sections, allowing for stress relief of the main element. An M5 female threaded hole is provided on each power leg to allow connection to the customers power source, via ring terminals or busbars. The electrical connection is made at the base of the element against exposed graphite, which is kept outside of the hot zone of the element, eliminating the risk of a reaction between the power connection and the exposed graphite.

PBN/PG/PBN ceramic heaters are produced in a CVD reactor and consist of a PBN (Pyrolytic Boron Nitride) substrate, that has a layer of PG (Pyrolytic Graphite) deposited on one side. An element path is then machined into the PG layer, producing a hot zone, with power connection points, around a through hole, at each end of the PG element track. The PG PBN heater is then fully overcoated with PBN, to insulate the PG layer. Power connection points can be located inside the hot zone, or for better thermal uniformity on tabs outside the hot zone.

PBN/PG/PBN heaters can operate up to 1500c maximum temperature, with very fast ramp rates, low mass and chemically very inert to corrosive gasses and liquids and can withstand most molten metals. These heaters are also thermally shock resistant, mechanically durable, and have very high power density, up to 35 watts/cm2 (225 watts/in2). The layered pyrolytic structure also gives the PG PBN element very high thermal uniformity, on the PBN substrate side (opposite side to the element track). Samples can be placed directly onto the element surface.

They are suitable for use in UHV, High vacuum or Air (PBN to 900C, exposed PG power pads to 500C). PG (Pyrolytic Graphite) element is encapsulated in PBN (Pyrolytic Boron Nitride) completely protected from deposition product.

The Nickel / Chrome element is a popular choice of heating element and in air and vacuum heater. Whilst the element will reach around 1100°C generally it is used in conjunction with a ceramic top plate to mount samples. The top plate temperature will be 800°C where the sample can be placed.

Nickel / Chrome elementis the oldest documented form of resistance heating alloy, 1906. Our preferred choice is 80% nickel and 20% chromium, by mass, but there are many other combinations of metals for various applications. Nickel / Chrome wire is silvery-grey in colour, is corrosion-resistant. This material is suited to resistance heating because of its strength, ductility, resistance to oxidation and stability at high temperatures.

Thermic edge can provide these NiCrheating elements individually made to your required length or if you choose in a ceramic base. Additionally, we can supply insulation beads and top plates. You can purchase as much or a little of the heater as you require making maintenance quick and easy.

Tungsten

Tungsten is grey/white in colour and is very robust, it has the highest melting point (3422 °C) and lowest vapor pressure of all metals making it a great material for high vacuum technology. Because of its electrical resistance characteristics, it is frequently used in the construction of high temperature furnaces.

2600c maximum temperature, for use in UHV, high vacuum or inert atmosphere (Not suitable for use in O2 above 500c). Refractory metal elements are laser cut from sheet metal or wound into a coil from wire.

Molybdenum

Molybdenum material is a silvery metal with a grey cast which has a very high melting point. Because molybdenum possesses a very high melting point, a low coefficient of thermal expansion and a high level of thermal conductivity, it is used in many different industries. Operating at 2100°C in high vacuum.

Elements in Ceramic Housing

Thermic Edge offer, for every element, the option to include a ceramic insulationhousing for the element to sit in. Providing both protection and electrical isolation for resistance elements when integrated into the customers system. This is of particular use when space is limited within the customers process, or where heating is required in two directions above and below the element.

The housing is made to suit the element, and is manufactured from ceramic, which is suited to the customers process, consideringthe environment, vacuum level, maximum temperature and ramp rate required.
